The island
Manhattan is New York County, the island at the center of the city. Neighborhoods people mention most include Chelsea, Hell's Kitchen, the West Village, the East Village, Harlem and Washington Heights.
Getting around
The subway reaches nearly every part of the island, and the PATH train connects lower and midtown Manhattan to New Jersey. Penn Station and Grand Central are the hubs for commuter rail.
History
Stonewall National Monument is in Greenwich Village and marks the 1969 uprising at the Stonewall Inn. The NYC Pride March is held in Manhattan every June.

Neighborhood notes
Chelsea and Hell's Kitchen are on the west side, between 14th and 59th Streets. The West Village and Greenwich Village are downtown. The East Village is farther east. Harlem and Washington Heights are uptown.
Planning a night
The subway runs all night but less often after midnight, and PATH service is less frequent late at night. Check the schedule before you head home.
