Queer cruising app on Long Island

Written by Julien Lenaz, lead developer of cruush.

The island

Outside the city, Long Island is made up of Nassau County and Suffolk County. Fire Island is a barrier island off the south shore, and communities there such as Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines have long been LGBTQ destinations.

Getting around

The Long Island Rail Road is the main commuter line to the city. Ferries to Fire Island leave from south shore towns including Bay Shore, Sayville and Patchogue.

Using cruush

Before a weekend on Fire Island, you can move your pin there and see who is around. The far east end of Suffolk County is more than 100 miles from the city, which is outside the cruush service area.

Neighborhood notes

Nassau County is closest to the city and includes Great Neck, Hempstead and Long Beach. Suffolk County includes Huntington, Babylon and Islip, and stretches east to the Hamptons and Montauk.

Planning a night

LIRR service is less frequent late at night and on weekends. For Fire Island, check the ferry schedule, because the last boat can be earlier than you expect.
