What does cruising mean for lesbians?

Written by Julien Lenaz, lead developer of cruush.

A word with a gay male history

Most older writing about cruising is about gay men, so some lesbians feel the word is not theirs. Plenty use it anyway, and plenty prefer other words like hooking up or going out. The thing it describes is the same: looking for someone to meet, usually soon.

Labels on cruush

The sexuality list includes lesbian and sapphic, and you can choose up to three labels. Presentation labels include butch, femme, stud, tomboy, soft butch, stone butch, soft femme, high femme and hard femme.

The first move

A cruush is how you say you are interested without sending a message. If it is mutual, you can start talking, and parts of your profile that you saved for mutual cruushes open up.

Someone who will not take no

Block them. It works immediately.

Other words people use

Hooking up, going out, and just meeting up are all common. On cruush the word cruising is the name of the whole idea: you open a map, see who is nearby, and say so if you are interested.

Presentation labels

Butch, femme, stud, tomboy and the rest are optional. They are there for people who want to say something about how they present, and you can leave them off.
