How to start a conversation on a cruising app
Written by Julien Lenaz, lead developer of cruush.
Why the first message matters
People on a cruising app see a lot of messages. One that shows you read their profile and says what you want stands out, and one that just says hey usually gets lost.
What works
- Mention one specific thing from their profile.
- Say what you are looking for in a sentence.
- Ask one question that is easy to answer.
- Keep it short enough to read in a few seconds.
Examples
Something like: I like your photo of the bike. I am around Bushwick tonight and looking to meet someone. Are you free later?
Or when you are less sure: Your profile made me smile. Are you around this evening?
What to skip
- Opening with a photo of your body that nobody asked for.
- Long messages about yourself.
- Asking for photos in the first message.
- Sending the same text to everyone, because people can tell.
If there is no reply
Let it go. Sending one follow-up after a day is fine. After that, assume the answer is no and move on.
